BNL Tour - Hong Kong Tournament - March 12th 2004

A report on our latest tournament - held in Bangkok, By Rachael Stephenson

With temperatures soaring to 40 degrees outside and the footballers coming inside to watch the games - we thought for our netball skills, but really for the air conditioned relief - the BNL invitational tournament began.

There were 3 guest teams from Hong Kong, HK Valley, HKFC 1 and HKFC 2. From Bangkok there were 4 teams, BKK Asian Motifs, BKK Dubliners, BKK dwp and BKK Crown Southerners.

In tight games that certainly didn't reflect the resulting scoresheets, three Hong Kong teams and four Bangkok teams battled for five hours in a round robin tournament. At the end of the round robin, the four top teams went into 'sudden death' knock-out finals.

The results were:
Total goals for Total goals against Total game points
BKK – Crown Southerners 98 24 18
HK – Babes 57 32 17
HK – Valley 60 34 15
BKK – Dubliners 32 45 12
HK – Babes on Tour 31 49 10
BKK - Asian Motifs 23 66 6
BKK – DWP 21 72 8

1st Semi
BKK Crown Southerners vs BKK Dubliners (1 vs 4 – k/out)
BKK Crown Southerners d BKK Dubliners 16 to 2

2nd Semi
HK Babes v HK Valley (2 vs 3 – k/out)
HK Babes d HK Valley 9 to 8

G/Final
BKK Crown Southerners vs HK Babes (winners of semis)
BKK Crown Southerners d HK Babes 12 to 5

Congratulations to Crown Southerners on winning the grand final.

Winning Team

As with all tournaments, there are a number of people to thank:

The 15 volunteer umpires who not only played, but immediately played and then had to umpire. Thank you. These tournaments are not possible without YOU.

Thank you to the BNL for hosting the event and organising the excellent facilities at Harrow. I would also like to acknowledge all captain's and players on the quick one minute game change overs with two teams coming off, two teams coming on and the changeover of umpires. This could have been a co-ordinators nightmare but we finished the round robin comp ahead of schedule (by three minutes)!
To Jillian Adams - the HK liaison, who I'm sure has spent significant time co-ordinating flights, accommodation, transfers, mini-van hire and a lot of other things.
To Anne-Marie at Epicure - whose team put on a great spread of food, chocolate and drinks to keep us all going.
To Caroline at the Irish Xchange - for coming on Saturday night (on her night off) to ensure the night ran smoothly for us.
To all seven teams who participated, who gave everything in the games and for playing with fairness and camaraderie.
For anyone else I've forgotten to mention - thank you. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did hosting it. We hope to see you again soon.
